The Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development (MLTSD) will conduct a province-wide inspection initiative focusing on machine guarding to raise awareness and increase compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and its regulations. The inspections will run from February 17 – March 31, 2020.
The inspections will focus on sectors including automotive, food and beverage, wood and metal fabrication, textiles and printing, chemical, rubber and plastics, ceramics, logging (sawmills), and pulp and paper.

Workers can be exposed to several hazards when machines are not properly guarded during installation, repair or maintenance. These hazards can result in serious injuries or fatalities. In 2017, the WSIB received 2829 claims from workers for lost-time injuries related to machine guarding and electrical hazards.
